The Consumer Product Safety Commission reports that the death rate for child drownings in pools and spas is on the rise. With approximately 320 deaths of children under 5 in 2005, the study estimates an increase in nearly 75 deaths from the previous year. The most frequent drowning victims are kids between the ages of 1 and 2. Swimming pools accidents occurred most commonly when there was not appropriate supervision. Spa and hot tub deaths happened mostly as the result of drain suction, causing the child’s hair, clothes, limb, or other body part to be pulled or entangled in the drain. A federal law banning the sale, distribution or manufacturing of unapproved drain covers went into effect five months ago. The report also cites that fewer children are being treated for pool and spa-related injuries.
