A natural gas leak allegedly caused an explosion at a San Diego hotel construction site on May 20. The accident injured 14 people. Nine construction workers were hospitalized with burn wounds, and three remain in medically induced comas. Other reported injuries to workers included lacerations and orthopedic injury. The natural gas explosion occurred downtown in the early afternoon, frightening residents as far as Point Loma. The building is 30 stories, and the explosion affected the 4th through 7th floors. Approximately 400 people were working in the building at the time of the accident. Nine workers were sent to the burn unit of UCSD Medical Center. Three of the nine had burns covering 20%-35% of their bodies. Some of the burns were third degree burns. Those three employees are still in comas and on ventilators, with everyone hoping for the best possible outcome. Two other workers remain in the hospital with laceration and other injuries.

California OSHA will be inspecting the accident site as soon as it is declared safe. A Hilton Hotel is planned for the high rise building. It was scheduled to open in December.
