The accident occurred in the southbound carpool lane on the San Diego Freeway (405), and resulted in the road’s temporary closure. The crash happened when a single car was stopped in the car pool lane, having stalled or crashed. To accommodate the non-moving vehicle, two other cars, a 2008 Mercedes C300 and a Nissan Altima, stopped behind it. A third car, a 2007 Mazda, did not stop and crashed into the standing ones. The crash resulted in the middle car, the Nissan Altima, being trapped and bursting into flames. A teenage girl who was a passenger in that car was the fatally burned victim. The driver of that car received second and third degree burns over 40% of his body and remains hospitalized. Other victims suffered lesser injuries including bone fractures. It is not known why the driver of the last car failed to stop.
