SAN DIEGO COUNTY RESIDENTS SUE UTILITY COMPANY OVER SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA WILDFIRES; ALLEGE THAT COMPANY’S NEGLIGENCE CAUSED INJURY AND DAMAGES
This past Friday, 126 families in Southern California filed suit against San Diego Gas & Electric Co. for causing the wildfires that swept through 200,000 acres of Witch Creek, Guejito, and Rice Canyon last October. The combined lawsuit alleges that the company negligently maintained its power lines that are alleged to have caused the wildfire. The suit also maintains that SDG&E could have taken reasonable care to reduce the risk by stabilizing the power lines in the face of Santa Ana winds. This contention is supported by an official report released by Cal Fire attributing the fires to sparking of SDG&E power lines.
This is sixth lawsuit to be filed against the utility company following the October wildfires. This latest suit includes residents from Fallbrook, Ramona, Rancho Bernardo and Rancho Santa Fe. In addition, the attorney for the case expects to add another 30 to 40 claimants by the end of the month. Although the amount of damages sought is unspecified in the official complaint, estimates put the losses at approximately $50 million. Over 1,200 homes were damaged or destroyed in the blazes.
In addition to actual houses damaged, the fires also caused nearly 1 million people to evacuate from their homes from approximately 350,000 homes. Furthermore, more than 40 people were injured and 2 killed as a result of the fires.
