Two women died by drowning when the car they were riding in plunged into a New Jersey river in 2004. A lawsuit filed against the city on behalf of their estates claimed that the road was dangerous and defective. A settlement was reached for $5.8 million which the families will share. The drowning of the women was not the only deadly accident to occur at the roadway site. Engineers and officials admitted that the road area was potentially dangerous. The section of street where the accident occurred had no guardrails or barriers to prevent the 15 foot drop into the river, and that warning signs were inadequate. Three women, including the two whose estates sued the city, died when their Jeep Cherokee drove off the road into the river. Another car drove off the same embankment killing the driver less than 6 months later. A city engineer admitted that the road section posed problems, including high speed issues and a warning sign that was poorly placed. Additionally, city officials were aware of incidents in which vehicles were prevented from plunging into the river because they hit an object first. Since the accidents, a temporary traffic light and guardrails have been erected.
