A study conducted by Indiana University found that nearly 40,000 elderly adults had been injured in accidents involving escalators between 1991 and 2005. In addition, the rate of injury in 2005 was found to be double that of the rate in 1991 (11 per 100,000 adults over 65 compared to 4.9 per 100,000 adults over 65). Reviewing data provided by the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, the study also found that 85% of escalator injuries were caused by slip, trip & falls. The injuries ranged by type, with the most prevalent being soft tissue injury, followed by lacerations and broken bones:

Elderly people suffered injuries to various parts of their bodies, with the leading areas being the lower body followed by the head and upper body.
Location of injury

  • 29% hips, legs or feet

  • 25% head

  • 24% shoulder or torso

  • 16% arms and hands

  • 6% other

Elderly adults are more prone to escalator accidents because they often experience less mobility, vision, or balance than the average adult. In addition, injuries suffered by the elderly tend to be more serious than the average individual, particularly those with frail health conditions.
