Posted On: August 13, 2008 by The Rudman Law Firm, PLC

Traumatic brain injury occurs when one suffers physical trauma to the brain. There are two types of injuries: one is a closed head injury which happens when the impact does not breach the skull, and the other is a penetrating head injury which happens when a foreign object pierces the skull and contaminates the brain tissue.

Generally a traumatic brain injury is determined by the severity of the injury and the location of the injury. Bases on these two factors, head injuries can be classified into mild, moderate, and severe traumatic brain injuries. Mild traumatic brain injuries are usually called concussions. To learn more about concussions, please check out our website page on Concussions.

Diffuse trauma injuries are usually associated with concussions and are generally caused by sudden acceleration or deceleration of the head. Focal injuries are injuries that occur in a specific spot of the brain. Several types of focal brain injury include a contusion, which is a bruising of a brain tissue, and intracranial hemorrhage, which is heavy bleeding within the skull.
