Quadriplegia is a condition in which a person experiences paralysis affecting all four limbs of a person (arms and legs). The paralysis does not necessarily have to be total paralysis to be considered quadriplegia.

Causes of Quadriplegia
Quadriplegia is caused by damage to the brain or the spinal cord at a high level. Some of the leading causes that could lead to damage to the brain or spinal cord are car crashes, gunshot wounds, and slip and fall accidents. Diseases such as myelitis and polio may also cause quadriplegia. Please check out our website at www.alawpro.com for more information on spinal cord injuries.

Symptoms Quadriplegia
The most obvious symptom of quadriplegia is impairment to the limbs and the torso. Impairment of the torso could mean a loss in controlling the bladder, digestion, breathing, and sexual function. Also, a person will have impaired senses in the affected areas. In addition, numbness or neuropathic pain might be experienced throughout the victim’s body.

Severity of the Quadriplegia Injury
The severity of the injury depends on what part of the spinal cord was injured and the extent of the injury. An individual with an injury at the highest cervical vertebra (base of the skull) (C1) will likely lose function from the neck down. An individual with a C7 injury may lose function from the chest down but will retain some kind of use of the arms and hands. A complete severing of the spinal cord will result in complete loss of function from the vertebra down while a partial severing or a bruising of the spinal cord will result in various mixed injuries and paralysis.
