CAUSES OF BURN INJURIES
Burn injuries can be the result of many different causes. Depending on the location and the degree of the injury, a burn injury victim may experience a variety of psychological and emotional distress. The following are some of the leading causes of burn injuries:
- Chemical burns: Strong acids or bases can cause severe burn injuries. Such chemicals include sodium hydroxide, silver nitrate, and sulfuric acid.
- Electrical burns: Many electrical burns come from workplace injuries or being cardioverted without a conductive gel. The internal injuries suffered from an electrical burn may be disproportionate to the physical appearance of the burn injury
- Radiation burns: These burns are caused by exposure to UV light, tanning booths, and radiation therapy. The leading cause of radiation burns is sun exposure. The UVB light is especially dangerous. Extreme sun burns can also lead to sun poisoning.
- Scalding: The most common cause of scalding is exposure to hot water. Although deaths are not a usual consequence of scalding, in some rare instances it has happened. Many victims of scalding are young children and the elderly over the age of 65.
