Transition to a nursing home can be a difficult experience for the entire family. Once the senior has moved into the residential facility, new potential hazards lurk. Poor or insufficient nursing home care can constitute elder abuse. Neglect, physical abuse or emotional mistreatment of the elderly is a crime. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid have compiled a new one to five star rating system of nursing homes across the country. Now nursing home residents and their families can see how their residential facility rates. To learn more about elder abuse and legal rights, please go to our website at www.alawpro.com. Federal officials have included almost16,000 U.S. nursing homes in the analysis, with over 1200 from California. Overall for-profit homes ranked lower than non-profit ones. Less staff at for-profit homes has been cited as a reason for their lower rating. The rating system can help determine which homes are preferable to others under general and specific criteria. The analysis includes examination of nursing facility staffing, quality of care and health inspections. The data used to compile the scores included the investigation of complaints against the facility, inspection records, number of clients restrained, and the number of those developing bedsores.
