The 2007 accident happened when a tractor trailer on Interstate 5 was speeding through a tunnel and then crashed into a concrete barrier. The resulting inferno led to a multi-car pile up killing a child and two adults. The truck was traveling faster than 65 mph in what was a 55 mph zone. As a result of the crash, the speed limit there is now 45 mph and speed monitors are located on either side of the tunnel. Originally, investigators believed that the truck’s faulty brakes were to blame.
