FATAL MEDICAL HELICOPTER CRASH: AIR AMBULANCE DANGER AS DEATHS RISE. CALL CALIFORNIA ACCIDENT LAWYERS

Medical helicopters used to airlift sick people to hospitals are making news as their safety records fall and crash numbers rise. Both medical personnel and the injured are dying in air ambulance crashes, and the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is conducting hearings to see what should be done. Thirty-five people died in nine med chopper crashes in the past year. Helicopter crashes in rescue scenarios can occur as a result of pilot error, lack of current safety equipment including sensors, poor product maintenance, and unsafe protocol for night flights. A lawsuit has been filed on behalf of a pair of firemen killed in a recent California medical chopper crash. The suit cites wrongful death, negligence and product liability among its claims. In the California crash, the air ambulance was transporting passengers to an Oregon hospital. The helicopter went down in Shasta-Trinity National Forest during takeoff. The families of the firefighters are suing the owners of the helicopter along with its maintenance company and manufacturer. The negligence claim is for the “piloting, operating, designing, manufacturing, selling, overhauling and/or repairing the helicopter and/or it’s [sic] component parts.” Most air ambulances are helicopter companies contracted by hospitals. The industry is a booming one with little regulation. The NTSB hearings are seeking to crackdown on loose rules and unregulated medical helicopter issues.
