In the Chatsworth attack, an elderly woman using a walker was attacked by two dogs. The animals knocked her to the ground, leaving her with a back injury and bite marks. A couple of men who attempted to help her were also mauled by the dogs. One of her rescuers suffered a large arm laceration, and the other received serious and potentially debilitating injuries. The Rancho Mirage dog mauling was fatal as a man was killed by Bullmastiffs he was alleged to be attempting to breed. The dogs remained very aggressive after police arrived at the site. Riverside County has now seen two deadly dog attacks in 3 months – the first involved two pit bulls killing a man in his family’s yard. A third attack involved a cocker spaniel and a child in Long Beach. The two-year old girl was attacked by her family dog when it bit her in the face. She was hospitalized with deep cuts or lacerations on her face.
In a related case, the family of a woman who was attacked by a chimpanzee has sued the chimp’s owner for $50 million. As a result of the primate attack, the female victim’s injuries included brain damage, possible blindness, as well as the amputation of her eyelids, lips, nose and hands. The chimpanzee had bitten other people, and at least one official warned the animal’s owner the chimp’s “worrisome behavior.”
