Everyday appliances and domestic machines can be hazardous, especially for children. Garage doors can be particularly dangerous if they malfunction, slamming into their victim or pinning them to the floor. A malfunctioning garage door may open or close suddenly, get stuck, fall, or operate at the wrong time. The results can be deadly, as shown recently and tragically when a Palmdale boy died after a garage door hit him in the head. The Palmdale incident happened when the victim’s mother attempted to close their home’s garage door. Somehow the door malfunctioned and stuck the 3-year old in the head, killing him. The garage door was motorized and sectional. A police test confirmed that the door slammed closed suddenly when operated. The child’s death is being called an accident.
