At the Riviera Healthcare Center in Pico Rivera, an elderly resident died from severe burns he received in a smoking accident. Now the assisted living facility has been fined $100,000 by the State of California, the highest fine possible. The senior victim died after sustaining burns on more than 40% of his body. He accidentally set himself on fire lighting a cigarette. An investigation discovered that the nursing home permitted smoking but lacked a safety plan. Also staff did not react by using a fire extinguisher or fire blanket, both of which were available.
