As reported in an earlier blog, a blast at a ConAgra Slim Jim processing plant in North Carolina killed 3 employees. Now two workers who were hurt in the explosion are suing a sub-contractor hired by ConAgra. The lawsuit comes after the United States Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives conducted an investigation finding that the blast occurred as the result of a gas leak started in a pump room. That pump room was last serviced by the sub-contracting company being sued. The employees launching the legal action sustained injuries including serious burns as well as head, back and leg injuries. One of them remains hospitalized.
In another deadly food plant-related incident, Tyson Foods must pay $500,000 and serve probation for one year as the result of a worker death that occurred in an Arkansas plant. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration’s (OSHA) investigation found that the food giant committed “a willful violation of worker safety regulations,” after an employee was poisoned to death by hydrogen sulfide gas fumes created by chicken feather decomposition. Tyson is calling the incident accidental.
