When people think of abuse, they often envision physical, sexual, or emotional harm being done to the victims. But abuse, particularly elder abuse, has many more forms. Two of the most common are (1) financial abuse, in which seniors are defrauded into relinquishing their money, and (2) neglect, in which the caregiver or nursing home fails to provide safe and appropriate care. If you believe that you or a loved one has suffered any form of elder abuse in Southern California, you should seek legal help by calling 1-800-ALAWPRO and speaking to a lawyer for free. Two instances of financial elder abuse made news in the Southland this the past month. In Santa Ana, an insurance agent was apprehended by police. He allegedly tricked an 82-year-old Rancho Cucamonga woman into giving him $114,000 from her savings and buying an unneeded $13,000 insurance policy. As a result of the scam, the elderly woman lost her home and was unable to support herself financially. In Fullerton, Orange County, a paralegal conned an 84-year-old lawyer into selling his law firm for $20. The elderly attorney had early stage dementia, and his law practice was worth $750,000. The paralegal has pled guilty and was sentenced to two years in jail.
