Trains carrying a heavy load of freight or several passenger cars might not be able to stop in time for pedestrians on the tracks or cars parked illegally over railroad tracks. The conductor may hit the emergency brake in time, or blow his horn, but in desperate times, little else may be done before a collision occurs. In an accident on August 11, 2009, west of the 91 Freeway, Howard Clark was driving on the freeway when he swerved from the left lane to the right shoulder, hit the guard rail and rolled down an embankment before landing on railroad tracks. A passing train struck the car on its passenger side before the car turned over onto its roof. Clark was pronounced dead at the scene.

According to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics, in 2007, there were eight fatalities that resulted from train accidents and collisions. Of the eight fatalities, four of them were a result of the train’s derailment. A total of 2,580 accidents occurred in 2007, 200 of which were collisions. Four passengers on trains were killed as a result of accidents in 2007, and 630 trespassers on the railroad tracks were killed in accidents. Most of the trespasser fatalities occurred on the railroad while a smaller number occurred at the grade crossing. There was a total of $305.3 million in damages from train accidents in 2007.
