The California Highway Patrol keeps track of all traffic accidents that occur in the state through the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). In 2007:

- There were a total of 184,994 injury collisions, with the most occurring in October (16,454) and the least in February (13,649);
- More male than female drivers were drivers in the collisions;
- The highest number of fatal collisions occurred between 5:00 pm and 6:00 p.m. while the least amount occurred between 3:00 a.m. and 4:00 a.m.;
- The age group with the highest number of fatal collisions was between 20 and 24 years old;
- In fatal collisions, 486 of them occurred when the collision was head-on and while the cars were moving straight before the collision occurred;
- There were a total of 813 fatal collisions that occurred head-on, 1,197 accidents in which a vehicle was broadsided, 1,183 accidents where a vehicle hit an object and 476 accidents in which the vehicle overturned;
- A total of 168,480 people in passenger cars were killed or injured while 11,589 people in on a motorcycle or scooter were injured or killed.
