ELECTROCUTION DEATH IN WORK-RELATED ACCIDENTS: ELECTRIC SHOCK VICTIMS SHOULD CONTACT A CALIFORNIA ATTORNEY.

Electrocution deaths and electric shock accidents at work sites, including construction projects (indoor and outdoor), restaurants, agricultural sites, industrial plants, and offices, are a serious and ongoing problem for workers in the U.S. and California. It is estimated that 7% percent of all work-related fatalities are due to electrocution in some form, with around 700 employees being electrocuted per year. Electric shock is the 4th leading cause of death in occupational fatalities. If you or someone close to you has been electrocuted in a work-related incident in California, please contact a lawyer immediately.

Striking power lines both above and below ground, problems or mishaps in electric building circuitry, and the combination of water and electric outlets are all deadly contributors which can lead to death by electric shock. OSHA cites numerous fatal accidents in which poor safety maintenance led to the electrocution fatality of employees. Often times, mere education and training can prevent the devastating results of electrocution. Here is a brief recount of one such tragic incident:

electric%20shock%20sign.jpgA small group of employees was constructing a chain-link fence in a residential neighborhood under a live power line. The erection of the fence required the workers to install long metal rails (21 feet each) for assembling the top of the fence. During the fence construction, one of the workers held a 21-foot rail upright, causing it to come into direct contact with the energized power line. The laborer, a 25 year old man, was electrocuted with 7200-volts of electricity, and tragically, he died. Inspectors found that the electrocuted worker received no professional training or instruction regarding general construction or power line hazards from his employer or supervisor.

Have you or a loved one been electrocuted in an accident in California? If so, please seek the advice and help of an experienced personal injury attorney. CALIFORNIA BURN LAWYER: ACCIDENTS, INJURIES AND DEATH DUE TO FIRE

Burn injuries can occur as a result of accidents at home, on the road or in restaurants or other establishments. Mild to severe burns can be painful, costly and traumatic. Approximately 700,000 victims receive medical treatment for burn and fire injuries per year; while 4,500 people will die from these injuries. Severe burns affect more than just the person injured: family members, friends and others are involved in the trauma, treatment and recovery. Fire and burn injury is an extremely common and present danger.

While most burns are preventable, most people are not familiar with the range of burn injury hazards and the psychological, physical and social impact a severe burn can have. When a person suffers a severe burn, family and friends also go into crisis. Everyone around the victim is affected by this terrible and often avoidable tragedy. Here is some general information about burns.

    Burn_Degree_Diagram_svg.png

    Burn Classifications:
Not all burns are the same. There are varying levels that are used to describe the extent and severity of a burn:

    • 1st Degree Burn: Results in redness or whiteness of the first layer of skin. Minor pain and little or no scarring

    • 2nd Degree Burn: Blistering of first and/or second layers of skin. Can involve more or less pain depending on nerve involvement. Minimal scarring.

    • 3rd Degree Burn: Most of the upper layer of skin is lost, and damage to ligaments, tendons and muscle occurs. Nerve endings are destroyed, and pain may not exist. Possible loss of hair follicles and sweat glands. Scarring and possibly fatality depending on size of area burned.

    • 4th-6th Degree Burn: Extreme burns usually used to describe burns resulting in death.

    Burn Causes:
Burns can be caused by a variety of factors from fire, electricity, chemicals, radiation, or hot liquids and gases.

    • Scalding is a type of burn caused by hot liquid or gases. Steam, very hot tap water, and boiling food at a restaurant can cause scalding.

    • Chemical Burns from chemicals such as acids or bleach can cause damage down to the bone.

    • Electrical Burns are caused by an external electric shock, such as lightning or poorly installed or maintained electric outlets.

    • Radiation Burns can be caused by overexposure to UV light, tanning booths, X-rays or chemotherapy.

    Burn Accident Locations:
    Burns can occur almost anywhere:

POTENTIAL PRODUCT LIABILTY ON FORD VEHICLE RECALL: GOVERNMENT URGES CAR OWNERS TO REPAIR DEFECTIVE CRUISE CONTROL SWITCHES TO PREVENT ENGINE FIRES

Automobile owners in Los Angeles, California and across the nation are being urged by the federal government to respond to a product recall that covers Ford, Lincoln, and Mercury sport utility vehicles (SUVs), pickup trucks, vans, and passenger cars. Ford issued the recall in 1999 in response to hundreds of complaints and dozens of lawsuits after faulty cruise control systems caused engines to catch on fire, even after the vehicles were turned off.

Nearly ten years after the recall, Ford Motor Company still faces over 100 lawsuits as a result of their defective product. In addition to severe burn injuries, three wrongful deaths have been linked to engine fires caused by the faulty electric cruise control system. Furthermore, the NHTSA has received approximately 60 complaints since August 2007 on this problem.

    car%20accident%20fire.jpg

Although 9.6 million vehicles have been recalled, only a little over half of them have been fixed. Worried about the outstanding 4.6 million automobiles with defective wiring systems, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued consumer advisory warnings to owners of these vehicles. It appears, however, that Ford is struggling to produce enough replacement parts for this recall. As a temporary solution, vehicle owners can have their local service dealership disconnect the cruise control switches until replacement parts are in full supply. Owners who opt for this interim solution will not have to leave their vehicles at the dealership or make an appointment. A representative from the Ford Motor Company says that there should be an “ample supply” of replacement parts by June.

The recall covers cars as old as 1992 and as new as 2003. To check to see whether your SUV, truck, or car is affected by this recall, please refer to a full list published by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/recalls/recallsearch.cfm.)

If you were the victim of this product recall and have suffered injury or damages from an engine fire in California, we are here to help you. Please call 1-800-ALAWPRO to speak to an experienced legal expert at the Law Offices of Greenberg & Rudman LLP. We are here to help you recover.

BOY BURNED BY CIGARETTE LIGHTER LEFT BY APARTMENT MANAGER IN LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA

Burns are extremely serious injuries in children and lead to over 116,000 children being treated for fire and burn injuries. Over 40,000 of these children each year require hospitalization and over 500 of these children die from fire and burn-related injuries. Over the past few years, there has been an increase in lighter-related fires and burns associated with misuse by children. Cigarette lighters are easier to ignite than matches, in many cases, so younger children more frequently are involved in lighter-associated fires and burns. Generally it is unattended children who start these types of fires and adult negligence is to blame.

This is tragically what happened to one of our client’s. He was a seven year old boy who lived in an apartment complex with his mother. The apartment house manager agreed to baby sit the boy when the mother had to go to work, so the boy was taken to the manager's apartment. The boy's mother did not smoke, and the boy had not seen a cigarette lighter before he was at the manager's apartment. The mother never taught the boy not to play with matches or cigarette lighters as the boy had not been exposed to these before. The manager was a smoker, and had a cigarette lighter. While the mother was at work, the boy watched as the manager would light one cigarette after another with the lighter. The manager had to go out to a tenant’s apartment, and left the lighter on the table next to the boy. While the manager was out, the boy started to play with the lighter, and lit himself on fire. The boy was severely burned with third degree burns by the time the manager came back. The liability policy that covered the apartment complex paid for the negligence of the apartment manager, and we were able to settle this case for many hundreds of thousands of dollars.

If your child has been burned or injured in a lighter or match related accident, please call our law offices at 1-800-ALAWPRO (1-800-252-9776) for a free consultation. We cannot stop the injury from having happened, but we may be able to get you proper monetary compensation to help care for your child for the rest of his or her life.

SCALD BURNS CAN CAUSE SEVERE INJURIES AND EVEN DEATH: LOS ANGELES BURN LAWYER CAN HELP YOU IF YOU’VE BEEN A VICTIM

A scalding burn is a serious burn to the skin caused by hot liquids, such as tap water, soup or tea, or steam. Scalding is considered a second degree burn or third degree burn and results in damage to the skin in the form of blisters or skin splitting. Hot tap water burns are the second most common cause of serious burn injuries to people, and can lead to death. Some burn centers estimate that as many as half of the burns they treat are a result of a scalding accident. Every year around 112,000 people are treated at emergency rooms with scald burns and around 6 percent of them need hospitalization. A significant number of scalding happens at home by tap water that's too hot. Children under the age of five, the elderly and the physically impaired are particularly susceptible to scald injuries because their skin is thinner and it can be harder for them to get out of the way of boiling hot liquids when they spill or splatter. In fact around 80 percent of hot tap water burns occur within this group. The problem can result from people’s water heaters being set too high. When tap water is heated to 122 degrees, it takes 30 seconds for a child to get a third-degree burn. But when tap water is heated to 149 degrees, a third-degree burn is instantaneous.

    scalding%20drain.jpg

According to National Safe Kids Campaign, around 5,000 children are scalded each year, most often in bathtubs. The average bathtub scald burn covers 12% of the body surface with a third degree burn. The location of where scald burns most often occur is 95% residential settings: 54% in apartment houses and 46% in single family homes. Scald injuries can be fatal if it covers a large enough part of the body. It can happen quite suddenly, even to adults. Often people are at home in the shower when the water temperature suddenly skyrockets. If people cannot get out of the way or turn the water temperature down, they can sustain significant burns over their entire body. In this situation, especially the elderly will have a difficult time getting out of the way of the burning water in time not to sustain injuries. Many states now require water heaters to be preset to 120 degrees, but sometimes water in the tank can reach temperatures of 150 degrees even in this situation. Plumbers can install devices to prevent this type of scalding. It is known as a temperature-actuated device and when water flowing through this device gets too hot, it will snap shut and prevent water flow. In addition, a thermostatic mixing device is inexpensive and will mix hot and cold water together. Other examples of scald burns are when boiling water or liquid, such as soup or tea, accidentally spills or splashes someone. If a child or adult sustains a serious scald burn, it can require hospitalization and skin grafts, and even lead to death. If you or a loved one has been the victim of a scald burn injury, you should seek the advice of an experienced injury lawyer.
