On October 12, 2009, a motorcyclist was killed exiting a parking lot in Riverside. The California Highway Patrol keeps track of all traffic accidents that occur in the state through the Statewide Integrated Traffic Records System (SWITRS). In 2007:

• There were a total of 3,557 fatal collisions, with the most occurring during the month of August (330) and the least occurring in December (271);

• The age group with the highest number of fatal collisions was between 20 and 24 years old;
• In fatal collisions, 486 of them occurred when the collision was head-on and while the cars were moving straight before the collision occurred;
• There were a total of 813 fatal collisions that occurred head-on, 1,197 accidents in which a vehicle was broadsided, 1,183 accidents where a vehicle hit an object and 476 accidents in which the vehicle overturned;
